KIPP Sunnyside Celebrates New Athletic Field
The Houston Texans, Houston LISC and KIPP Houston Public Schools recently celebrated the opening of the new KIPP Sunnyside campus athletic practice field with a ribbon cutting ceremony. The field was made possible by a $50,000 grant from the NFL Foundation Grassroots Program, a partnership between the NFL Foundation and LISC.
The field will accommodate practices, games and physical education classes for more than 1,800 students and be used by youth athletic programs in the Sunnyside community.
More than 200 Sunnyside students attended the ceremony. The festive event also featured special speakers KIPP Founder Michael Feinberg, KIPP Superintendent Sehba Ali, Houston LISC Executive Director Amanda Timm, and Houston Texans President Jamey Rootes -- plus an appearance by TORO and the Houston Texans Cheerleaders.
“We have a long partnership with KIPP and the Sunnyside campus,” said Amanda Timm, Houston LISC Executive Director “It is wonderful to see how the campus has grown and how this new field will provide an additional place for the students to grow, play, and be healthy leaders of this community.”
When asked what the field meant to them, the students answered by expressing their gratefulness. “We are so thankful to everyone who took time to give us this new field,” said one 5th grade student. “That is what makes it special.”
Since 2002, the NFL has invested over $950,000 in the greater Houston area to build fields. This is LISC’s ninth athletic field with the Texans and second with KIPP.
