LISC takes a resident-led approach to comprehensive community development. In 2009, Houston LISC launched the Great Opportunities (“GO”) Neighborhoods, modeled after the national LISC program called Building Sustainable Communities.
Sustainable communities offer the positive environments needed to ensure that all residents are provided the opportunities and tools to build assets, to participate in their communities, and to become part of the mainstream economy.
Houston LISC’s role in Building Sustainable Communities is that of partner, funder and connector to citywide relationships and resources. LISC brings to communities:
- Financial resources (loans and grants)
- Knowledge (national experts, consultants and leaders in community development)
- Relationships (local leaders and national policymakers)
