Active Living

Duluth LISC supports policies that promote active living as part of our Building Sustainable Communities Initiative goal of promoting safe and healthy environments and lifestyles. We encourage and support projects that promote lifelong active living through design, active transportation, and a robust system of parks and trails for hiking, skiing and biking. Our recent efforts include supporting Duluth's Complete Streets Ordinance, and we are currently backing the extension of the Western Waterfront Trail, the Cross City Trail, Safe Routes to School for the Lincoln Park Middle School and the Duluth Mountain Bike Traverse. We also support and participate in the MN State Department of Health's "Safe and Wakable" neighborhoods, currently active in Lincoln Park and the Hillsides.

With a population of 86,277, Duluth is home to 43% of the population of St. Louis County and is a regional economic hub.  St. Louis County ranked 72nd out of 84 counties for overall health outcomes in the 2012 County Health Rankings developed by the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation and the UW Population Health Institute. This low ranking is largely attributable to what the study authors class as “Social and Economic Factors” (the county ranks 70th)  and the “Physical Environment” (73rd) and not to available “Clinical Care” (10th).

The Bridge to Health report from 2010 showed that 9,489 people in Duluth are obese, and 28,000 are overweight. At the same time, although 92% of people with household incomes below 200% of the federal poverty guideline live near Duluth's walking trails, only 30% make regular use of them.
