Access to education is a hallmark of a sustainable community.  It encompasses not only high-achieving public schools but also quality child care, school readiness programs, after-school programs, educational opportunities for adults and leadership training for parents and school leaders.  Detroit LISC promotes educational advancement and youth engagement as part of comprehensive community development.

DEPSA GroundbreakingThe Detroit Edison Public School Academy (DEPSA), one of the highest performing charter schools in the state, built its first high school in 2012.  Located near Eastern Market, the 58,000 square foot Early College of Excellence was opened in time to serve students in the 2012-13 school year.  It includes a state-of-the-art gymnasium, media center, administrative office, and classroom space that meets the U.S. Green Building Council's LEED Platinum specifications.  The project totaled $11.5 million, with most of the financing coming in the form of equity and loans through the Chase NMTC LISC Charter School Investment Fund, with the loans supported by State Farm.

DEPSA Early College of ExcellenceAdditionally, through the partnership between National LISC and the National Football League (NFL) Foundation, DESPA was able to obtain a $200,000 grant for a playing field through the NFL Youth Football Fund Grassroots Program.
