Buffalo LISC’s commitment to the West Side began in 2000, when, along with VOICE Buffalo, the Massachusetts Avenue Project and a host of other community groups and individuals launched the West Side Community Planning Collaborative.
The result was an ambitious plan that began to integrate the work of agencies that too often operated in silos. By setting their own cooperative course, though, the trajectory of their work, and that of the neighborhood, began to change.
Today, Buffalo LISC’s Building Sustainable Communities work on the West Side is headed by PUSH Buffalo as the Lead Agency. With dozens of organizations new and old, the West Side Sustainable Communities Plan was competed and released in 2011 (link to pdfs of plan). The plan recognizes the earlier planning efforts, incorporates the PUSH Green Development Zone plan and embraces the comprehensive community development approach of LISC’s Building Sustainable Communities strategy.
The document celebrates and strives to preserve and enhance the growing ethnic, economic and cultural diversity on the West Side, while building on the communities additional strengths to improve the neighborhood for all. From investment in affordable housing, to revitalizing commercial districts, supporting educational opportunities for youth and rebuilding public space and playgrounds, the residents of the West Side have once again outlined an aggressive agenda and are already hard at work bringing their vision to light.
