Bay Area LISC's Healthy Richmond initiative is dedicated to addressing physical, social, and economic factors and systems by working with multiple sectors and stakeholders, from individuals to large public systems. The initiative is part of a 10-year California Endowment (TCE) statewide effort known as “Building Healthy Communities” (BHC), and is a community-driven effort to improve social systems that affect health and healthy behaviors, by improving economic development, safety, schools and access to health services in Richmond’s California.
The vision of this place-based effort is to create a place where all children are safe, healthy, and ready to learn. We know that health is mostly determined by the environment – the quality of life in our neighborhoods and its educational and economic opportunities, among other factors, are all social determinants of health. TCE’s BHC effort is aligned with Bay Area LISC’s larger and broader Building Sustainable Communities Strategy, which is also focused on improving the quality of life in low-income communities.
Bay Area LISC's staff, along with their partners Community Housing Development Corporation (CHDC) and Healthy Richmond's Youth Organizing Team (operated through the RYSE Center), work to achieve this vision and other related community-identified goals. Residents, community leaders, and others in Richmond are working collectively to create new economic opportunities, improve services and resources, and affect the overall health of the community and its residents. Everyday new people and organizations are joining the partnership of 40 plus organizations and residents to help make Richmond a safe, vibrant and healthy place.
